The UN System Needs Renewing

2 April 2014
Joseph Camilleri

To survive the UN must be renewed and democratized. Security Council membership should be increased to 25, with Great Powers remaining permanent members but their veto power gradually phased out over 20 years. A new People’s Assembly, elected by universal suffrage, should monitor, advise and hold to account the entire UN system. A new Consultative Assembly should provide a platform for – and a spotlight on – business groups, trade unions, professional associations and community organizations.
